LAN in hostels.... Whats the use....

Most reading are aware of the slow speeds one achieves while surfing on the net in the hostel on campus…. Snug in your beds during the winter, the cold air filling ur room, the rasais covering ur body, how does one kill time… sleep is the best option for many followed by books and then if you’re a total computer freak, some games…. The summers another story altogether…..

LAN in the hostel offers just more than beat-the-snail pace surfing comfort as well as the gmail log in which might take ages(you might grow white hair till then just so you didn’t know).. well here are some things which can b done on a hostel LAN….

1. Well Counterstrike… yes arguably the most famous FPS game in the world played for the sheer adrenaline coursing through your body or the sick and well addictive feeling of being a cold blooded terrorist or CT killing off bots or ur fellow buddies in the world(yes the law does exist outside your computers guys don’t try that knife move on your buddy in the real world….) Other games to consider include Warcraft, Age Of Empires, NFS etc etc etc….

2. Another amazing idea which popped up Is the use of DC++. Though it hasn’t caught up with the present crowd as much, it’s a great way to share stuff in the hostel as well as across all hostels.. eliminating the need to pester your best friend for a vehicle to drop off or pick up some stuff in another hostel… really cant comment much on this cause the author hasn’t well used It too much so(oops… sorry)

3. Another use of a lesser known software is Utorrent or other bittorrent clients… (for those who don’t know www.utorrent.com) if u do visit a cyber cafĂ© at mata mandir… download torrents from sites such as (www.mininova.org , www.torrentz.com) or pop over to a dayscholars place just to download these files into your portable hard drive. Load the torrents onto your desktop Utorrent software… and download away since your downloading speed although horribly slow(5-6kbps is not good) u just might catch that hindi movie u put for download a week later if speeds permit movies can get done faster also ebooks are a valuable resource online… BUT PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE STUFF YOU DOWNLOAD…. DOWNLOADING COPYRIGHTED STUFF MIGHT GET YOU INTO TROUBLE… CONFIRM THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE TORRENT AND THE TORRENT SITE BEFORE DOWNLOADING… Other download managers are Kazaa and ofcourse Limewire and Ares...(personally a torrent user so cant speak much about their use)

4. Share your personal media such as event pictures or a picnic or even a reunion pics as well as videos with your close group of friends..(chase away that nosy next door neighbor before you do this if its really private)

5. Another use which I found useful was the transfer of Operating Software as well as Laptop drivers as well since most of our hostellers love catching viruses for the heck of it and then love reformatting it… So some computers in the hostel might have your drivers… so check them out

6. Lastly its better than DVD transfer for the reason that DVD has the added issue of responsibility and safety not many will like to take that and if your friend has all the FRIENDS series and you lose a single DVD, your in big trouble buddy… bigtime

So, the LAN is not a useless thing folks… though the main ORKUTTING cannot be done… well the above can be tried out… do let me know if there are more uses(will be eager to know if there are..)

here's a primary draft of the intro...i used ...smthin like technical...or rather official language...go thru it..tell me where to change...whether to make it humorous or the more formal one does good.... and yeah...i need to put in a starting line for which i need you to to tell me exactly what the meaning of the hindi word drishtant is..

here goes...without the first line of course...

Formed in 1996, Drishtant has evolved from being just the literary society of MANIT( formerly MACT) to a versatile society which endeavours for the all round development of an individual by building confidence, improving verbal skills, harnessing creativity and inducing all such qualities that are essential for having a good persona; and all this is implemented by events which involve active participation of a person, apart from being a lot of fun and providing a healthy interactive environment.

as you see dis is a bit on da formal side....i kept it short and tried to put everythin in more generalized terms so that the basic idea is conveyed...do respond with full blast criticism....

sachit..
ppl pls reply to these articles,we need to get the discussion underway so tht the site can strt off

ARUSHI-ENHANCING LIVES

Situated in an alley of shivaji nagar, quite close to our college, is a school, its not a normal school that you or me might have attended a few years back, but it’s a special school, a school for special children…......its called ARUSHI
Be it visually disabled children, or mentally challenged people, or those who need speech therapy, ARUSHI is trying to help them all. And as the authorities there would tell you, its not your sympathy that these children are looking for, not even the money, as many NGOs would need that, the children at ARUSHI are looking for your love and affection…one visit there and you will understand it all….
As you enter the gates of the school, looking at the floor (with trails for the blind), and the computer centre, the recording room, you will notice that this is a place for the under privileged that has got its share of financial aiding from the government and various other institutions and people. But when you meet the inmates, looking at their faces, the enthusiasm in their voices, the excitement in their actions, you realize how much cut-off do these children feel from the outer world…..
Once you talk to them, see their talents, gather their thoughts, you come to know that whatever monetary help they get, can never substitute the power of human love.
Just the simple act of asking them their name, listening to their songs, dancing with them, can work wonders in their day-to-day monotonous lives…….
Apart from this, there are other ways in which you can help the school, there is a recording room where scores of audio books are recorded everyday and help the blind students right from primary school to high school and even higher….they have got all the technology that is needed, its just the workforce that’s at a shortage……hope to see you there………….

RAM GOPAL VARMA

Early life:
Born on April 7,1962,Ram Gopal Varma’s early life was spent in heydarbad,he was not considered to be a good student at school, instead he was famous for his love of films, both Indian as well as American. His interest in films was so much in those days that he dropped out of his engineering to start a video parlor.

Career:
He started of his career as a production assistant in the Hyderabad film industry working in telugu films.
His first success came with the blockbuster hit film SHIVA. After the movie’s success in telugu he remade it in hindi as his first hindi venture.
He truly came into the spotlight with his film RANGEELA, which also marked the arrival of the musical maestro A.R. RAHMAN to bollywood.

His films:
His film SATYA is considered to be a masterpiece by many critics, based on the Mumbai underworld, this was a movie where RGV recognized his forte, he got the filmfare award- best film(critics).
What followed was a string of films based on the underworld, from COMPANY to D, to AB TAK CHAPPAN, all of them were either directed or produced by him.some hits, some flops.
His most ambitious venture-RGV KI AAG, the remake of the classic SHOLAY, is considered the biggest failure of bollywoods history thus far. But not getting bogged down by its failure he has come back with SARKAR RAJ-the sequel to his previous hit SARKAR.
He has also produced a few light films like DARWAZA BAND RAKHO and MAIN MADHURI DIXIT BANNA CHAHTI HU.
With different movies like BHOOT and DARNA ZAROORI hai he proves he is one of the most unusual filmmakers in bollywood. And is rightly called the Francis coppola of the Indian film industry.

RUMOURS:
Has been linked with almost all his heroines, from urmila matondkar to antra mali, to nisha kothari.
Has the reputation of having an eccentric attitude, which is not liked by all in the industry
He says he can never work with SRK, because he cannot make such melodramatic movies
